1999: The family of 4-year-old Luis Cruz will quietly mark the first anniversary of his death when four teenage gunmen showered the family's Brier Hill home with bullets.

The Columbiana County Board of Elections finds no ballot tampering in the counting of write-in ballots in a Washingtonville council race in which one of the poll workers was the daughter of a council candidate.

Initial reports show 21 deer were harvested in a hunt that opened in Mill Creek Park on Oct. 31. According to a park spokeswoman, the park's goal of 100 to 125 deer is "doable. "

 

1984: With the Christmas shopping season at hand, nearly 500 parking spaces are lost in downtown Youngstown with the closing of the Parkade at the former Higbee building.

John Calvey, manager of Higbee's properties in Youngstown, said the building's use is suspended indefinitely until structural issues can be addressed.

Three retirees of the Westinghouse Electric Corp. plant in Sharon say toxic substances such as PCBs, acetone, asbestos, and cyanide were dumped for decades at the River Road landfill in Hermitage.

Veteran CBS commentator Howard K. Smith told a packed audience at Youngstown State University that most of America's problems—massive overspending, aimless foreign policy, and reduced productivity—could be solved, but time is running out. 

 

1974: A fire of suspicious origin heavily damages the Curry School in the Fowler-Vienna School District. Classes will be canceled for the rest of the year.

The Hubbard congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses prepares to dedicate its new Kingdom Hall on Jacobs Road.

Boardman and Youngstown police combine forces to arrest 16 people for questioning in a series of burglaries and armed robberies.  An assortment of weapons and drugs are confiscated. 

 

1949: For the second time in 42 years, a bishop is consecrated in Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland with all the pomp and splendor of the Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dr. Nelson M. Burroughs is bishop coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, with the right of succession to Bishop Beverly D. Tucker.

North Korean Communists say two Americans seized in September on a South Korean ship are being held hostage to force  U.S. recognition of North Korea.

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, pastor of Marble Collegiate Church in New York City, addressed 1,000 industry leaders at the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce black-tie dinner at the Hotel Pick Ohio.
