A little red building in Niles has been making a big difference for thousands of families since 1923.
At Niles Community Services (NCS), volunteers work tirelessly to make sure essential needs are provided to people who come in each day. They are a multi-service organization that does more than just address food insecurity in the area.
“We see all ages and genders. Some are generational, some are new to us, some come short term,” Jean Williams, director of NCS said.
The organization services people living in Niles, Mineral Ridge, Weathersfield Township, and McDonald. From Monday to Friday, Williams said, they see about 250 families a week.
The organization is known for offering essentials like clothing, hygiene items and even assistance with monthly bills.
“We have a utility program where we help people with reconnection. We also work with HEAP and other charities to put a package together, so people don’t have the disconnection,” Williams said.
The agency has seen an increase in people who need critical necessities, including food assistance.
The organization receives 20,000 pounds of food each month from Second Harvest Food Bank.
Volunteers, local businesses, and community donations help make it possible for NCS to meet a growing demand.
“I am glad we have the resources and funding to do this, to make a difference,” Williams said.
