YSU picks up second win, Magestro reaches career milestone
The Youngstown State women's basketball team knocked off St. Bonaventure 60-52 Tuesday at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center. The Penguins improve to 2-0 on the season.
Kennedy Catholic graduate Malia Magestro reached 1,000 career points at the 3:10 mark of the second quarter. Magestro finished with a team-high 15 points in the win.
"It was my dad's birthday today and that's all he wanted as a present," said Magestro. "It's really awesome to reach this milestone and of course just getting it on a night where it's a really big game for us. I think a statement win."
The Penguins scored the first nine points of the game and led the rest of the night.
The Bonnies cut the deficit to 55-50 in the fourth quarter but YSU held on for the win.
"Do I want a close game? No. But I think this is really good for our team," said head coach Melissa Jackson. "You can try to simulate this stuff in practice but for us to be here on the big stage, under the lights and get a win and learn from it. We'll go back and watch the film and we'll learn a lot from this victory."
Jewel Watkins scored 14 points and blocked three shots, while Bella Samz had a career-best 10 points. Abby Liber chimed in with 11 rebounds.
Dani Haskell led the way for St. Bonaventure with 24 points.
The Penguins will continue their homestand on Friday against Clarion. The game against the Golden Eagles is an addition to the schedule, and it will begin at 6:30 p.m.
