Child flown to hospital after apartment fire in New Castle
A child has been flown to the hospital after a fire broke out at a New Castle apartment building Saturday night.
New Castle Fire Chief Mike Kobbe told a 21 News contributor on scene the fire started in an apartment on the first floor of the Oak Leaf Estates on Oak Hill Drive around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
Kobbe says a woman and two children were in that apartment. The woman suffered smoke inhalation and one of the two children suffered serious burns. The child was flown to the hospital for treatment.
All other residents were able to evacuate safely, but most of the apartments sustained smoke and water damage. Many residents are being helped by the Red Cross with one going to stay with their family.
Chief Kobbe told our contributor the fire appears to have started in a bedroom of a first floor apartment and burned into the second floor and through the roof. The exact cause is under investigation by the state fire marshal.
