1999: Andrew Arena, agent in charge of the FBI's office in Boardman, says the Mahoning Valley has more FBI agents per capita than anywhere else in the United States. Ultimately, he told the Western Reserve Council of the Navy League that it was up to the people to do their part in cleaning up the area by electing honest politicians.
Former Mahoning County Sheriff Phil Chance appears in U.S. District Court in Cleveland, where he is sentenced to six years in prison for taking bribes from organized crime figures.
State Sen. Robert F. Hagan, D-Youngstown, favors abandoning a 36-mile Youngstown and Southern Railway line between Youngstown and Darlington, Pa. Hagan says the Columbiana Port Authority's plan to keep the line active would be a waste of taxpayer money because any train using the line would be limited to 10 mph.
1984: For the first time in memory, all three sitting Trumbull County commissioners, Arthur Magee, Tony Latell, and newcomer Thomas Battin, will be Democrats, but political observers say there is no guarantee of harmony.
Dr. John R. White, a Youngstown State University anthropology professor, and a crew of students have uncovered thousands of pre-Civil War artifacts during a dig at the Hubbard House in Ashtabula, a stop on the Underground Railroad.
Gov. Richard F. Celeste and Ohio Chief Justice Frank D. Celebrezze headed the Columbus delegation at St. Patrick Church in Hubbard for the funeral of PUCO Chairman Michael Del Bane.
1974: Tom Krispinsky fires five touchdown passes to lead Linharts Towing to a 32-6 victory over Tino's Beer and Wine, winning the first Youngstown Touch Football League championship at Homestead Park.

Arson investigators sift through rubble at Charlie's Grocery Store at 530 Covington Street. Three firemen were injured fighting the fire. After fire crews left, looters took groceries from the building.
1949: Ohio Edison Co. will purchase the controlling interest of the Ohio Public Service Co. for $35 million, which provides electricity for Warren and 331 other communities.
Three teenagers riding on a motor scooter are injured when the scooter is hit by a car on Excelsior Street. Treated at St. Elizabeth's are Richard Aey, Rosemary Sainato, and Betty Racich.
The Hickory Township school board lifted the probation of a teacher who paddled a pretty 17-year-old sophomore. Protesting faculty members agreed to resume overseeing extracurricular activities.
