Youngstown Symphony Orchestra music director resigns due to 'personal, health and family reasons'
Just months after being named music director for the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra (YSO), Sergey Bogza has announced his resignation.
According to a press release, Bogza has resigned as of Thursday, November 7 due to "personal, health and family reasons." He's served as music director since July of 2024.
"Though Sergey's circumstances prevent him from serving as YSO Music Director, we are grateful to have met and engaged with him for a short time. We wish him well," said Youngstown Symphony Society CEO Matt Pagac.
Following Bogza's resignation, guest conductors have been secured for Ballet Western Reserve's (BWR's) performance of "The Nutcracker" December 7 and 8, for which YSO provides the music, as well as YSO's "Most Wonderful Time of the Year" holiday concert on December 21.
Dean Buck will conduct BWR's performance of "The Nutcracker" and Edward Leonard will lead YSO in the "Most Wonderful Time of the Year" performance.
Buck is a Cleveland-based conductor who has conducted the YSO for the BWR production for the past two years. He serves as the assistant conductor and chorus master with Opera Western Reserve.
Leonard is a Pittsburgh-based conductor who first appeared with YSO for "Rhapsody Royale" in October.
YSO's season will continue in 2025 with concerts on January 19, February 15 and March 2. All of these performances will feature guest conductors.
