Youngstown State University Women's Soccer Head Coach Brian Shrum has announced his retirement from coaching to pursue new opportunities and focus on family.
Shrum, who spent seven years at the helm of YSU, led the Penguins to program's single season wins record and the first appearance in the Horizon League Championship game in 2022.
"We are grateful for Coach Shrum's dedication, leadership, and passion for YSU women's soccer and his commitment to our student-athletes over the last seven seasons," Strollo said. "We wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
During his tenure, seven players earned Horizon League postseason honors and seven were named to the league's all-academic team.
"I want to extend my deepest gratitude to my wife, Lori, my daughter Alexa, and my wonderful family for allowing me to fulfill my dream of becoming a Division I coach and supporting me throughout my career," Shrum said. "Lori has been my rock, handling so much on her own while I pursued a goal I set 15 years ago. Without her unwavering support, I wouldn't be where I am today. To my daughter Alexa and her family, thank you for always being there for us. I look forward to spending more time with Dash, Italia, and Blakely—I love you all."
Shrum also expressed his appreciation for the support he received from YSU's Athletics Director Ron Strollo.
"I am incredibly grateful to Ron Strollo for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to lead the women's soccer program here at YSU over the last seven years," Shrum said. "I've been blessed to work with talented players and dedicated coaches who have contributed to the growth and success of this program. The future is bright, and I look forward to watching the team continue to thrive from afar."
