Mahoning County Commissioners have unveiled a brand-new piece of artwork at the Mahoning County Courthouse Thursday morning to pay tribute to veterans and the sacrifices they've made for the United States.

Commissioners unveiled the "Stand Together-A Veteran's Flag" in the Mahoning County Courthouse Rotunda, where it will remain on display until it is moved to the forthcoming Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission on Belmont Avenue.

Local veterans and their families attended Thursday morning's ceremony.

The piece was created using red, white and blue drywall screws arranged to form a 3D waving American flag. Each screw was originally painted and driven to varying depth to give the piece a dynamic, textured appearance.

The piece also carries the signatures of veterans at each location it has visited.

The project was directed by Veterans Standing Together Across America, which is a national organization with the mission of honoring veterans through art.

Commissioners say the piece stands as a testament to the dedication of local veterans and symbolizes the support of the Mahoning County community.
