Blight areas in Mahoning and Columbiana counties are about to be reduced.

Both counties will receive $500,000 to remove 30 vacant buildings in Mahoning County and 39 in Columbiana County.

The Ohio Department of Development funds the Brownfield Remediation Program, which assists communities in removing industrial, commercial, or institutional buildings or property cleanup, while the Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program provides grants for demolishing commercial and residential buildings.

The awards went to 65 counties and totaled $33.2 million to demolish 1,091 vacant buildings.

“I’m grateful for the attention that our community is receiving from the latest round of demolition awards,” said State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown). “Not only does this ensure that our neighborhood is free of hazardous substances, it allows us to create economic opportunities that will continue to make our district thrive.”
