The Youngstown State University football team traveled to No. 19 Illinois State to take on the Red Birds, as they sought to win their second-straight game.
The Penguins jumped on top in the first with a safety, but the Red Birds retook the lead with a field goal. Illinois State went on to score before the half and they led 9-2.
Both teams traded touchdowns in the third, but the Red Birds scored twice and still led 23-9.
Late in the 4th with less than five to play, Beau Brungard connected with Max Tomczak on 4th and goal, which made it 23-16.
The Penguins did not get a chance to tie the game as Illinois State went on to beat YSU 23-16.
Youngstown State moved to 3-7 on the season and 2-4 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
They will travel to Southern Illinois next Saturday.
