Youngstown police have charged a truck driver and the driver of a car that slid under the truck’s trailer.

Police found a Chevy Cruze wedged under the trailer of a truck at Belmont Avenue and West Commerce Street shortly before noon on Thursday.

According to a police report, two people inside the Cruze—driver Sammy Cage and a female passenger—were found conscious but in distress. The woman could be heard yelling in pain, while Cage exhibited signs of injury, including a bloody mouth. After both were extricated from the wreckage, they were hospitalized and were last said to be in stable condition.

The semi-truck driver, Rodney Graham, told police he was stopped at West Commerce Street and was preparing to turn south onto Belmont Avenue. He said he believed the Cruze was going to turn east onto West Commerce Street; however, the vehicle continued north and collided with the trailer. Graham was cited for failure to yield when conducting a left turn.

Police later discovered that Cage's driver's license was suspended for non-compliance, leading to a citation for driving under suspension. The passenger, who owns the car, informed officers that she did not have insurance for her vehicle, which has been towed and is currently on hold for the traffic division.
