Owner of dog who was stabbed in Youngstown calls for justice
Jamie Markovich was in tears Wednesday, recounting the harrowing ordeal her dog Nikko went through, when three children, aged five, seven and 12 allegedly stabbed at him through a hole in the fence in his backyard in Youngstown.
"The whole situation is just very disturbing," Markovich said. "An innocent animal not doing anything wrong on their own property in a fenced-in yard, to be viciously attacked by children, it's just...I'm in disbelief," she said.
Nikko, who was leashed, couldn't get away and suffered some pretty serious injuries.
"The vets, the doctors believe that he did ingest glass," Markovich said. "He couldn't even defend himself, if that was the case, you know and he wouldn't because he would never hurt a child," she said.
Markovich has owned Nikko for about six or seven years and said he's a gentle giant. Now, she's calling for justice but at the same time, she's a little conflicted given the children's ages.
"At the end of the day it is wrong and justice does need to be served but how do you punish a five year old for something like this," Markovich said.
Markovich hopes the children will receive some form of counseling.
"I have so many emotions toward this because I know these children probably, maybe really didn't know that it was wrong or maybe they were not taught," Markovich said. "Animals are so loyal and they don't have a voice and I just want to be maybe a voice for animals," she said.
With the way his condition is looking, the vets at MedVet in Akron said Nikko could be leaving the hospital today or tomorrow and be right back home with is loving family.
