An East Palestine woman was flown to a Youngstown hospital with life-threatening injuries after State Troopers say her SUV was involved in a head-on crash in Unity Township.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 35-year-old Ashley Irizarry was seriously injured Friday afternoon when a semi-tractor trailer crossed into the oncoming lane of State Route 165 and ran into her Nissan Pathfinder.

Troopers say the truck struck with such force Irizarry’s SUV was pushed into another SUV that was behind her.

Irizarry was trapped in the wreckage and had to be rescued by local firefighters.

Neither the truck driver, 39-year-old Matthew Bertolette of Columbiana, nor Sela Guy, 20, East Palestine who was in the other SUV, were injured according to the patrol.

The Highway Patrol says in a news release that Bertolette was distracted during the crash.

State Route 165 was closed between Route 14 and the Mahoning County Line but is reopened.
