A Cardinal Mooney football coach was allegedly punched by the father of one of the members of the football team on Friday following the game.

According to a police report filed on Friday with the Youngstown Police Department, Cardinal Mooney Head Coach Carl Pelini was in his office after losing the football game to Warren Harding when the player's father entered and allegedly "sucker punched" Pelini in the face.

The report says that Pelini exchanged words with the football player over concerns about a fight on the field during the game.

The report states that the football player's father "barged through the doors and asked who had been giving [his son] a hard time." Pelini told officers he told the player's father had words with his son, which was followed by the alleged punching of the coach.

The report states that Pelini had blood on his face near his left cheek and chin. The report also lists that Pelini may have broken some ribs during the incident.

The report also states that other coaches who witnessed the attack told police officers that Pelini fell to the floor and the player's father was on top of the coach, continuing to strike him. The coaches intervened, and at that point, the man left.

The report also stated that the football player was present during the fight and alleged that he was physically involved.

Youngstown Police Detective Jason Simon told 21 News, "We are aware of, and are actively investigating, the report of an assault at Cardinal Mooney High School on/about October 11th involving Coach Carl Pelini as the reported victim. The validated police report has been prepared and released by the YPD Record Room so that the public can be accurately informed. As this is an ongoing investigation of a criminal incident, nothing further can be released at this time."

It is unclear at this time if charges will be filed in the incident. 21 News has contacted Cardinal Mooney Principal/President Nick Beyer for comment.
