The League of Women Voters of Ohio visited Youngstown State University Friday morning to help students register to vote in the 2024 presidential election.

The stop was their second to last on their state-wide "Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Power" campaign, which brought the organization to over 20 colleges and universities ahead of an October 7th voter registration deadline.

The non-partisan group is emphasizing reaching out to young voters to counteract trends of low registration and turnout seen in Ohio during the 2020 presidential election.

"A lot of the outreach we do is to voters on the edges," Lisa Lee Kohler said.

"Right now we have a lopsided electorate," League of Women Voters of Ohio's Trevor Martin tells 21 News. " We have a 59% registration rate in Ohio of the age group between 18 and 24. That is the lowest. And 52% of those folks turned out in the last presidential election."

The group says they're not only focused on getting young voters registered, but providing non-partisan information to enable voters' decision-making. They believe correcting misinformation and making candidates' policy positions accessible helps motivate voters to turn out to the polls.

"One of the ways we do that is with our voter information guide," Kohler adds. "It is a completely non-partisan way for people to look up candidates."
