Mathews Elementary School awarded grant to create 'calm corners' for students in need
Mathews Elementary School has been awarded a $1,000 grant to create portable "calm corners" for students in need.
According to a press release, Mathews Elementary School K-2 Counselor Samantha Lantz was awarded $1,000 from the Ohio School Counselor Association to create 30 portable calm corners and grief kits to help students in need of self-regulation tools at home.
Lantz says calm corners provide resources for teachers to teach and coach students in self-regulation.
"During my time in the classroom and interactions with students during small group and individual sessions, I've recognized that many of our students lack the means to create these spaces at home, which led to the idea of development portable calm corners to ensure these tools are available to our students outside of school," Lantz said.
Each kit comes with directions on how to use it, a folder with grief resources for families from the New York Life Foundation, the book "The Invisible String" by Patrice Karst, the book "A Little Peaceful Spot by Diane Alber, workbook pages and a coping skills tool box.
