At the Giant Eagle in Hermitage, volunteers greeted shoppers.

They're asking them to pick up some of the most requested non-perishable items to help put food on tables for children and adults who otherwise would likely go hungry.

In two years the need for food assistance in Mercer County has increased by around 130%.

"We have 40 member agencies throughout Mercer County helping us distribute the food to needy neighbors. We are seeing all walks of life because times are tough, grocery costs are expensive, SNAP assistance is being cut," Patty Tucker, Development Coordinator for the Mercer County Food Bank said.

Every canned item, cereal box, non-perishable food, and toiletries will be stocked on shelves for winter, the busiest time of need each year.

Volunteers are an important part of making this happen.

"The Mercer County Food Bank is just so wonderful. They help out in many different community aspects: children's, adult, and senior programs. And it's a real flexible organization to be a part of," MaryAnn Works said.

Last year the food bank distributed 2.6 million million pounds of food.

This year it expects to distribute 3 million pounds of food.

With every dollar donated the Mercer County Food Bank can multiply the purchasing power to provide four meals for neighbors in need.
