1999: A 30-year-old Euclid man arrested for the robbery of Cortland Bank after a money packet given to him by a teller exploded is a suspect in 13 other robberies in the Cleveland area.
As part of Warren's 200th birthday celebration, Warren native and astronaut Ronald Parise, who attended Turner Junior High, Emerson Elementary and Western Reserve High mementoes he took to space and back, a varsity letter, a pennant and a Reserve Raider Indian head.
U.S. Rep. Newt Gingrich's second wife, Mahoning Valley native Marianne Gingrich, has subpoenaed cards, e-mails, and phone records from Callista Bisek, a House staff member, as part of divorce proceedings. Mrs. Gingrich, who was married to the congressman for 18 years, questions whether Gingrich spent the couple's money on Miss Bisek.
1984: Democratic vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro tells a Federal Plaza rally crowd that President Reagan promised four years ago to help the steel industry, but his policy has been, "Let it Rust."
Dr. William Binning, chairman of the Mahoning County Republican Party, says Democrats Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro's attacks on President Reagan are a desperate attempt to hide their poor polling numbers.
During a debate in Boardman sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, U.S. Rep. Lyle Williams, R-17th, denied Sheriff James Traficant's accusation that Williams was receiving money from utility interests and called on Traficant to disclose the source of his campaign cash.

1949: A 24-year-old Campbell man is being held on a murder charge in the beating death of George Goggins during an argument at the "Honest George" used car lot operated by Goggins at 503 Elm St.
Betsy Lingenfelter and Jim Barton, both of Austintown Fitch High and recipients of the $300 Rachel Davis and Benjamin T. Davis Memorial Scholarships, are freshmen at Youngtown College.
