Mahoning County Sheriff's Office receives nearly $150,000 in safety grants

The Mahoning County Sheriff's Office has received nearly $150,000 in grants in order to make Mahoning County's roads safer.
According to a press release, the Ohio Department of Public Safety awarded the Sheriff's Office $55,000 in Safe Communities grants and $94,147 in Federal Traffic Safety grants for a total of $149,147 in grant funding.
The Safe Communities funding could go towards projects such as traffic safety education, as well as enforcement and engineering. Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene says these funds are critical to keep Mahoning County safe.
"Based on the crash data, we have identified speed, impaired driving, texting while driving and seat belt use as a priority for Mahoning County and are pleased to work with our partners at the state level to address this safety issue," Sheriff Greene said.
According to the release, the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office will be conducting high-visibility enforcement and working overtime hours to reduce these crashes.
