Mill Creek Metroparks requests over double increase for 2024-25 deer hunting season
Mill Creek Metroparks is looking to remove even more deer from the park during the 2024-25 hunting season.
According to a request to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources filed by Metroparks Natural Resources Manager Nick Derico, the Metroparks are looking to have 75 deer removed from the park this season.
That's over double the amount requested for the 2023-24 hunting season. Records show the Metroparks had asked for the removal of 30 deer that season.
This year's hunting program is set to begin Monday, October 7 and last until March 31, 2025. Once all the deer are processed, the Metroparks plans to give the meat to the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.
The deer hunts began as a way to combat deer eating too much of the park's vegetation putting its plant life at risk.
Derico previously told 21 News the hunts were meant to be a long-term solution with the hunts going on for about five to 10 years.
Last year, professional sharpshooters removed a total of 38 deer from the Metroparks while amateur hunters removed another 166.
