Lakeview Schools to reopen Friday following social media threats
Lakeview Schools are set to reopen Friday, Sept. 13, following threats that caused safety concerns for staff and students - closing the district down today, Sept. 12.
A comment posted on Snapchat, a social media site where photos can be sent between users that are deleted soon after, began circulating with multiple comments and misinformation being tacked on to it.
These comments made it seem like there may have been threats made against Lakeview Schools.
Following an investigation from the Cortland police Department, which required interviewing those that made each post, it's been deemed that rumors of the threat stemmed from miscommunications or misinformation that was added to the original post.
Officials say they have spoken with the originator of the post, who told them those rumors were not factual, according to a letter released by Superintendent Ashley Handrych.
Despite this, police are still investigating to figure out how these rumors spread.
"Cortland Police will continue to identify and interview each person involved in reposting this on social media," Handrych says.
Additionally, police may bring in a prosecutor to introduce inducing panic charges for those involved, depending on what they find.
"The specific details of many of these individual situations are primarily confidential," Handrych adds. "This makes communication difficult. It is not my intent to provide vague or ambiguous information; I will give as much information as the law provides or the situation warrants."
While schools are reopening tomorrow, an increased police presence has been requested by the district.
Meanwhile, Grandparent's Day at for Lakeview K-7 will be moved to a future date. Details of that will be announced later.
