The Mahoning County Engineer's Office has proposed a project that would reduce the amount of lanes available for travel on sections of Glenwood Avenue.

According to a press release, the Engineer's Office is asking for the public's input on a project to restripe Glenwood Avenue from Western Reserve Road to Midlothian Boulevard in Boardman.

This project would reduce the amount of lanes on the roadway from four to three with one through lane in each direction, a center two-way left turn lane and dedicated turn lanes as needed.

The space freed up from this project would be used for northbound and southbound five-foot wide bike lanes from Western Reserve Road to Overhill Drive on each side of the road.

Additionally, a single-lane roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Wildwood Drive. Drainage and traffic signal improvements will also occur.

The project is currently in its environmental engineering phase, which includes environmental studies and preliminary plan development.

Right-of-way acquisition is expected to begin in the fall of 2024. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2026.

A virtual open house public involvement event will begin September 20 and last until October 20. Once it begins, that open house will be accessible here.

Meanwhile, others are already weighing in on our Facebook page.

Debby L. questioned why bike lanes or a roundabout are needed at all.
She says "we have enough issues getting around town, don't make it worse."

Renee S. agreed, saying Midlothian is "a mess" as it is.

Ron W. calls the project a "bad idea" and fears people will end up "playing bumper cars" in the turning lanes.

Karen S., however, likes the idea.
She says it'll be great to see bike lanes connecting Mill Creek park with Boardman and downtown.
