West Niles Virus found in Grove City mosquitoes
West Nile virus has been identified in mosquito samples collected from Grove City borough in Mercer County, according to a press release from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
This is the second positive test for the virus in Mercer County this year. The department will conduct additional monitoring in the area and take appropriate mosquito control measures based on the findings.
No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Mercer County so far. The virus typically causes no symptoms in most people, but some may experience fever, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and rash. Severe illness can occur at any age, with individuals over 60 and those with certain medical conditions being at higher risk.
Health officials recommend residents take steps to prevent mosquito bites, including using insect repellent with DEET, wearing long sleeves and pants during dusk and dawn, and eliminating standing water sources around homes and properties.
