A Niles man is scheduled to appear in municipal court Thursday to answer charges filed after a dog was rescued from a home littered with trash and feces.

Healthy Hearts and Paws President and CEO Jason Cooke tells 21 News that Dean Kirsch is charged with one count of Cruelty to Companion Animals.

According to a Facebook post from Cooke, the non-profit assisted the Niles Police Department with a dog discovered to be living in "deplorable conditions" in a home on Hyde Avenue on Sunday.

Cooke says the dog had no food or water and the home was "completely covered" in dog feces and smelled of urine and decay.

Pictures posted to Facebook by Cooke show trash scattered about the house including several cans of iced tea, garbage bags, kitchen equipment, and more. You can see these pictures for yourself in the slideshow above.

The dog is now safe at the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project.
