1999: A missing inmate from the Elkton federal prison was captured while hiding in his wife's car in the prison parking lot.  Authorities say they will charge his wife with complicity to escape.

Liberty students will be attending class for the first time in the district's new $10.2 million high school.

Clarence Smith, chairman of Compco Industries, is honored as the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce's Business Person of the Year. 


1984: The  Lisbon Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol steps up its coverage in southwest Columbiana County in response to complaints of coal-hauling trucks speeding and operating recklessly.

About 80,000 people are expected on the opening day -- Youth Day -- of the 138th annual Canfield Fair.

The battle for the 17th Congressional District opens when the Republican incumbent, U.S. Rep. Lyle Williams, and his Democratic challenger, Sheriff James A.  Traficant Jr., appear at the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce "Salute to Industry" breakfast. 


1974: Alan Kosick of Columbiana and Patricia Kemerer of Canfield reign as king and queen of the Canfield Fair.


Merle E. Cook, 51, of Warren, dies of a single gunshot six hours after being shot by an unknown assailant at his barber shop at 8063 E. Market Street in Howland.

A firebomb tossed into the Cassius Avenue home of Youngstown Patrolman  William W. Johnson caused an estimated $1,500 in damage. 


1949: Common Pleas Judge H.E. Culbertson of Ashland County limits to three the number of striking pickets at any gate of the Taylor-Winfield Co. in Warren. 


A four-engine aircraft made an emergency landing at Youngstown Municipal Airport after surviving two terrific storms in Pennsylvania undamaged, although three passengers were injured and the cabin was in shambles.

  
Major Gen. Leo M. Kreber, commander of the Ohio National Guard, announces that Co. D, 145th Infantry Regiment in Youngstown, has won the Eisenhower Trophy for general proficiency.
