Junior Fair Market raises $700k in first two days of Canfield Fair

Members of the Mahoning County Junior Fair have raised quite a profit so far during livestock auctions at the Canfield Fair.

In the first two days of the auction, the young farmers raised a combined $700,000. The highest earner was Michael Kanagy, who sold his Reserve Champion Market Beef Cow for $12.50 a pound for a grand total of $18,250. Another participant, Payton Henderson, sold her Grand Champion Market Beef Cow for $8 a pound, bringing in $12,240.

The Junior Fair consists of students from several different organizations around the Valley, including 4-H clubs and Future Farmers of America clubs. All proceeds from the event go right back to the individual who raised the animal. The students often use the money they raise at auction to purchase future animals or to put themselves through college.

Additional auctions raised money for charities Friday night. Several chickens were sold for $10,000, with that money going toward a Camp Whitewood scholarship fund in memory of a former Junior Fair member who recently died.

The final Junior Fair sale is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, September 2nd.
