Abigail's Bakery in Austintown closes its doors

An Austintown bakery may be closing its doors for good - unless someone can step in and purchase the operation.

Abigail's Bakery recently announced it would be closing down until further notice due to  Owner Bill Smith's ongoing medical issues.

Smith's health issues began in 2016 when he went completely blind while driving on the highway. He had temporary blindness again at work a week later which forced him to stay at home and look for a hobby.

He started cooking and baking soon after and that led to a business selling baked goods out of his house. It grew from there, now occupying the former Bill's Place near Marc's grocery store.

In May, Smith says he started a GoFundMe to hire help to stay open but he struggled finding help. So instead the $3,500 raised from the fundraiser went to payroll an other bills.

Smith says that two groups are trying to put the money together to keep the 4,500 square-foot building open right now, though no progress has been made yet in doing so.
