Case of Legionnaires' Disease confirmed in City of Salem

One confirmed case of Legionnaires' Disease has been reported in the City of Salem.

Salem Mayor Cyndi Dickey confirmed with 21 News the disease was found in one client in a long-term facility in the city. The exact facility it was found in was not disclosed.

Officials could not find the source of the disease after running tests. The sewer system in the clients room at the facility was tested. The air conditioner had also been tested, with Mayor Dickey noting that it had been cleaned just before the confirmed case.

Mayor Dickey tells 21 News the client is recovering and is doing well and has been isolated since the disease was found. No other cases have been reported since.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Legionnaires' Disease is a serious type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. People can get Legionnaires by breathing in mist containing the bacteria.

Common symptoms include coughing, fever, headaches, muscle aches and shortness of breath. Other symptoms include confusion, diarrhea and nausea. 

Possible complications from the disease include lung failure or death. 

21 News reached out to the Salem City Health District who could not provide any information.
