Butler Art Institute denied accreditation loss appeal, must address storage concerns
Back in May, 21 News reported that the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown had lost its accreditation and had filed a repeal in an attempt to get it back.
Butler Event Manager and Director's Executive Assistant Susan Carfano confirmed with 21 News that repeal had been denied because the museum must first address storage issues.
Carfano tells 21 News the American Alliance of Museums said the museum needed to address these concerns before trying again. Carfano says they will try again in either 2025 or 2026.
In the meantime, Carfano says the museum has a team working on a plan to protect its art in rooms that contain water pipes in case of a rupture adding that the museum is considering all options including using Butler North if needed.
Butler North is a former church building located north of the museum. The church was purchased by the Butler in 2005 and could be used for extra storage.
The Butler Institute of American Art was built in 1919 and has been an accredited museum since 1989.
Carfano says when Joseph Butler built the museum all those years ago, he could never have imagined its collection growing and expanding to what it is today.
