14-year-old arrested after 12-year-old boy shot in Youngtown robbery
A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a robbery that turned into a shooting on the south side on Youngstown.
It happened around 9 p.m. on the corner of Gibson Street and Cambridge Avenue around 8:45 p.m. according to police.
Police responded to the scene after receiving a notification of shots fired in that area from ShotSpotter and a call regarding a shooting in the same area shortly after that.
The 12-year-old victim was found on East Lucius Avenue, where he was taken to the hospital. Police say he is in stable condition.
Police were eventually able to find and arrest the 14-year-old suspect. According to police, an interview with the teen revealed the victim was shot while the teen was robbing him for the shoes he was wearing.
After the suspect fired, he took off without the shoes. Police say they believe that's because he was shocked at himself.
Youngstown Police Captain Jason Simon called these crimes disturbing, especially at the age they're being committed.
"We're shocked and the whole community I think is shocked that this is happening," Captain Simon said. "In this case and in many cases, you have to have a solid family structure," he said.
Four months ago, the 14 year old suspect was being held at the Juvenile Justice Center for attempting to steal a vehicle, possessing criminal tools and assault, among other things. He was released after 88 days and placed on probation earlier this month.
Court records show it was contrary to the welfare of the suspect to remain in his home. Captain Simon said that kind of thing is a major contributor in the cycle of violence.
"It really should be appalling the community at large because the raising of a child is a family and community issue and they need to come together," Captain Simon said.
The teen is charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault. He is in custody at the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center and will be arraigned at 2:15 on Tuesday.
