Mahoning County Agricultural Society announces Hall of Fame inductees
The Mahoning County Agricultural Hall of Fame has announced its 2024 class.
Agriculture has played a huge role in Mahoning County since the county was founded 1846.
An induction ceremony will happen on Wednesday, August 28, at 11 a.m. on the concourse stage near the Grandstand.
Five people will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame: Harvey Firestone, Roger Greenawalt, Paul Myers and Francis and Jane Less.
Paul Myers was born in 1897 and grew up in Smith Township. He would provide meats to neighborhoods in Mahoning and Columbiana counties and later became a Reo Car and Truck dealer in Youngstown due to his travels.
Myers also founded Myers Equipment Co. while continuing to farm and served as Director Emeritus of the First National Bank of Salem.
Harry Firestone was a fourth generation farmer and inventor. In 1932, he invented the pneumatic farm tire, allowing machinery to move faster and smoother across fields. According to the release, Firestone was known as a humble man who worked along his employees.
Roger Greenwalt was born in 1951 and grew up on a dairy farm in Beloit. He went on to graduate from the Ohio State University with a dual major in Agricultural Education and Agricultural Finance in 1972.
After graduation, Greenwalt taught until 1999 and started the annual "Food for America" field trip for local elementary students. He served as a local government leader and now farms 650 acres along with running his farm drainage business.
Francis and Jane Less married in October 1941 and began producing fruits, vegetables and grains in Green Township. The couple eventually started a successful egg production business before focusing on corn and apples.
Francis was appointed to the Ohio Agricultural Finance Committee in 1973 and also served as a director of the Mahoning County Agricultural Society, president of the Farm Bureau Co-op Board and the Salem Fruit Growers Association. The Less family was named Rural Family of the Year at the 1992 Canfield Fair.
