The number of power outages caused by Tuesday's storms has been whittled down to about 3,400 homes and businesses, many which may be without electricity until late Saturday.

FirstEnergy reported 2,639 outages in Trumbull County, and 531 in Mercer County as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

FirstEnergy estimates that power in Trumbull County should be restored by Saturday night. Most Mercer County customers are expected to regain power by 11 p.m. Thursday.

There are still 279 outages in Mahoning County, with almost all of them in Youngstown. The estimated restoration time is Friday at 11 p.m.

In an email to customers, FirstEnergy says its crews are working 24/7 to restore power.

The email states that there are hundreds of broken poles and cross-arms, downed power lines, and fallen trees and debris blocking road access.

The utility says its primary focus is to remove hazards and assess the damage so that crews can access the site of an outage and begin to make repairs.

While crews continue working to restore power, FirstEnergy offers these tips:

  • Assume all downed or low-hanging power lines are energized and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet away from the line and anything it might be touching. Report downed lines ASAP to 9-1-1.
  • When operating a generator, the power coming into the home should always be disconnected. Otherwise, power from the generator could be sent back onto power lines, creating a hazardous situation for workers. View more generator safety tips.
  • Use a flashlight or battery-powered lantern for light. Use care when burning candles, as open flames are a dangerous fire hazard.
