Youngstown's Board of Control has awarded Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. (YNDC) with funding to build new homes in the city.

The funding comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which gives money directly to the city, who allocates it to eligible non-profit organizations.

YNDC was allocated $470,649.35 for the construction of two new single-family homes, starting on Bernard Street and moving on to other lots currently owned by the Mahoning County Land Bank.

The funding will help cover the costs of architectural design, labor and construction materials.

In January of 2024, YNDC applied for the funding through an application process with the city, where they outlined their plans for the homes, which neighborhoods would be selected, and how many families would be impacted.

"Our goal is to have more housing stock available for families and for the workforce, we want to build our economic status in the city, we want to help our families, and housing is an important aspect of repopulating the city,' said Youngstown's Community Development Director Beverly Hosey.

The projected completion date of these new homes in June, 2025.

The Board of Control also allotted YNDC an additional $600,000 for roof replacements and emergency repairs for homes throughout the city.
