A large gap in education left behind following the closure of Eastern Gateway Community College following its ongoing financial struggles.

To close that gap, Youngstown State University has announced an initiative to improve access to higher education with a new associate degree tuition rate of $265 per credit hour.

This will be effective Fall 2024 and will offer a full range of services, according to a news release from the university.

"Youngstown State University has a very proud legacy of providing a world-class education to students from across the globe," said YSU President Bill Johnson. :With this new tuition rate, we are ensuring affordability without compromising excellence."

YSU's existing associate degree programs will be impacted by this reduced rate. Additionally, 50 new associate and certificate degree programs have been added to meet the educational needs of the region following EGCC's closure.

Enrollment had been on pause for Eastern Gateway since February of 2024 and students who were not graduating during that semester were forced to look elsewhere to continue their education.

This was in response to ongoing financial issues with the college.

Since the pause, numerous other colleges, universities, and career and technical centers, such as Youngstown State University, Kent State University, and Coffin Career and Technical Center, have welcomed displaced students.

EGCC will officially dissolve Oct. 31.
