A veteran's assistance program is getting a large financial boost to assist in its mission to help veterans in the Mahoning Valley.

The Trumbull County Commissioners unanimously approved a one time grant of $90,000 in American Rescue Plan to Veteran's Outreach, a nonprofit organization that provides help for veterans like financial assistance for rent, utilities, food, fuel, clothing and other outreach services.

Veterans in need for food assistance has grown by 30% in the wake of the pandemic, according to Tery Eli, the executive director of Veteran's Outreach.

The money will be used to help the organization's direct-aid services and food program services to low-income veterans, according to the Trumbull County Commissioners.

Additionally, the money ease the financial burden of the organization as they work to renovate their operations new headquarters on Belmont Avenue in Liberty. Veteran's Outreach is working on making facade improvements and the grant frees up resources to assist in this work.

"We need to be standing at the ready to help veterans whenever they need it," Ely said. "This grant will help us do this. It's a big shot in the arm for us."
