Community reflects on death of Champion Township Trustee
A longtime Champion township trustee died last week after being elected four different times. William Templeton served as trustee for 13 years, and has been described as a steward of the community.
Templeton was a father, business owner and community leader.
"It’s just a shock to this community, and it’s going to be difficult adjusting," said Rex Fee, Champion Township Trustee.
A statement by his family said:
The life of Bill deeply resonated with many individuals. His steadfast commitment to serving his community was evident through his election as Trustee for Champion Township for four terms. Bill's profound affection for his community knew no bounds, and he consistently made concerted efforts to assist those in need. He dedicated his time to the township and took pleasure in engaging with the residents of Champion, gathering their input to enhance the community. He graciously sponsored numerous kids' athletic teams and initiated a program to provide support for those who couldn’t afford to participate. Bill was an individual of remarkable character with a heart of gold. It was widely acknowledged how much Bill valued his family, especially his devoted time with his grandkids, Madison, Jacob, and William.
Templeton was elected for a fourth term in 2023. After an unexpected heart attack, Champion Township Trustees are reflecting on the time spent working with Templeton.
"I’ve been involved in public service for 35 years and I always respect somebody that comes to the table prepared and offers his opinions on what’s facing this township," said Fee.
The Champion Township Road Department storage garage is one of many projects that Templeton was proud to support as trustee.
Trustee Fee said since Templeton was a steward of the community, it will be difficult to fill his seat.
"It’s a real, real big void when you lose somebody like Mr. Templeton and his years of experience. We hope to fill the unexpired term here, and we hope to get an applicant that can step in," said Fee.
The township has 30 days after Templeton's passing to appoint someone to his seat. If they don't meet this deadline, a committee will step in to help make the decision. If they do not come up with a decision within 10 days, it will be turned over to probate.
The Trustees will start accepting letters of intent Wednesday. Anyone interested can drop off the letters at the Township Administrator Building, or contact Fee.
