Could a younger candidate like Vice President Kamala Harris give democrats a fighting chance to motivate more people to vote for Senator Sherrod Brown?

State government reporter for USA Today Network Ohio Bureau, Jessie Balmert believes there's a strong possibility.

"He [Sen. Sherrod Brown] is in a very tight and competitive race against republican Bernie Moreno, so it's important for him that the top of the ticket is competitive, and so he has a very vested interest in who the next nominee is going to be." Balmert said.

Polling data is limited for the Senate race, but they show Brown having a small, but consistent lead over Moreno. That means he is already performing better than Biden was in Ohio and elsewhere. But that lead could surge in the coming months.

"I think one of the reasons is because President Biden's presence on the ticket was hurting down-ticket candidates like [Senator] Brown." Balmert said.

21 News Political analyst Bill Binning points to a likely bump in support from Black voters, a key group where Biden had lost support. But a potential Harris nomination does not mean this will only motivate democratic voters.

Still, Balmert points to Trump's strength in Ohio as a significant strength Moreno will have.
