Columbiana, Trumbull County students participate in summer manufacturing camps
Students in two Valley counties are getting ready to learn about manufacturing at summer manufacturing camps in both Trumbull and Columbiana Counties.
The camps were organized by the YWCA of the Mahoning Valley and the Columbiana County Educational Service Center respectively and will last from Monday, July 22 until Friday July 26.
The camps will give students the opportunity to explore careers in their communities, tour local manufacturing facilities and hear from experts. Students will learn how projects are made, participate in team-building exercises and work on projects specific to their communities.
YWCA Chief Operating Officer Varada Bhide tells 21 News the camp is currently in its second of three weeks with this week's theme being drone technology.
Students will learn all about drones including how to fly them in various settings, as well as how to design them. This week's program is in collaboration with the Oh Wow! Science Center and the Mahoning County Manufacturers Coalition.
Bhide told us week one was all about healthy living where campers learned about stress reduction, yoga, nutrition and much more. Next week will be all about robotics and coding.
According to a press release from Ohio-based U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown's office, 29 counties are participating in these camps this summer. The camps have been going on since 2013.
"Ohioans are proud of our state's long manufacturing history. To keep up that tradition, we are showing a new generation how they can help build our future and prepare for exciting, good-paying careers. That's what these camps are all about," Brown said.
