WATCHDOG: Questions continue over Realty Building security
Questions about who is allowed in the Realty Building during demolition continues. 21 News obtained pictures that show people dressed as construction workers taking items out of the realty building at dusk, on the night of July 11. Some of the items seen in the pictures are flat screen televisions, laptops and suitcases.
One Realty Tower resident told 21 News he's heard from several people who lived in the building, who also say some of their items were missing. He says some of those items were missing before firefighters went into the building.
"It's not about the actual items, it's a total loss anyway, it's just uncomfortable to know that somebody was in our space and we were told we couldn't get them, and then somebody else in fact did get them," said the resident.
So as to who should be responsible for securing this building that's being demolished? An easy question but hard to find an answer.
Carl Davis, Youngstown Police Chief, said Since the Realty Building exploded in May, YPD has patrolled the perimeter of the building all hours of the day, until two weeks ago. He says this is because of staffing shortages.
Barry Finley, Youngstown Fire Chief, said since firefighters went into the building to retrieve the residents items, who goes in and out of the building is up to the owner.
"Once we relinquish the responsibility of the building back to the owner, we don't have anything to do with it," said Barry Finley, Youngstown Fire Chief.
Yo Properties LLC, the owner of the building does have a security team at the perimeter of the building between 7:00 p.m., to 7:00a.m in the morning everyday. Although the security team hired by the owners covers the perimeter of the building, the work zone and building itself are the responsibility of the demolition crew.
When a 21 News crew went back to the site to ask the demolition crew about who was allowed in the building, but have we did not got a response.
During his press conference this afternoon, 21 News asked Mayor Tito Brown if YPD will begin an investigation after seeing these photos. He said he was unaware that items were taken out of the building,
"That's the first I'm hearing it. If there was anybody taking property that don't belong to them, those who are there with their property, they need to file a proper police report," said Brown.
When we asked the Davis if any investigation was underway, he said no because no police reports have been filed.
