As people driving through Austintown will easily notice, the Meijer Supercenter under construction is taking shape.

Tall cranes have placed several walls in place at the site along Mahoning Avenue, just east of Fitch Boulevard where Austintown Middle School once stood.

Giant pipes have been buried beneath the site to help carry away stormwater.

Meijer did not share an official opening day for the store but said construction is expected to take about 12 to 18 months. Construction began in April.

In addition to the store, Meijer plans to build a gas station on adjacent property.

Drivers can expect to see a traffic light installed at the Mahoning Avenue entrance to the store.

Meijer purchased the property across from Chick-fil-A back in 2016.

The old middle school was closed in 2007 and then demolished in 2017.
