A dispute at a Beaver Township mobile home community erupted into claims of a neighbor being sprayed with mace and a police officer being bitten.

Fifty-six-year-old William Armstrong was charged with assault after a neighbor told police that Armstrong tried to run him down with a pickup truck while he was mowing his lawn at the Maplecroft Manufactured Home Park off West Harvard Blvd.

The neighbor also claims that when he tried to drive around Armstrong’s pickup truck allegedly blocking the exit to his property, Armstrong sprayed his face with mace. A court had previously granted the neighbor a protection order against Armstrong.

When police returned the following day to serve the arrest warrant, an officer says Armstrong lunged at him.

As the two wrestled each other to the ground, other officers helped subdue Armstrong. But not before he bit the officer’s arm, according to the police report.

Armstrong allegedly called out to a relative to get his weapon from the trailer. The relative obeyed the officer’s order to ignore the request.

Since blood was running from the bite mark, the officer was checked out at a hospital.

In addition to the original assault charge, Armstrong was arraigned late last week on additional charges of resisting arrest, obstructing official business, assaulting a police officer, intimidation, and felonious assault.

Armstrong is scheduled to appear in county court in Canfield on Tuesday for another hearing.

If Armstrong makes bail, the judge has set conditions, including to stay away from the neighbor.
