United Way to fund temporary housing for displaced International Towers residents until August 2
The explosion at the Realty Building in Downtown Youngstown has caused quite a disruption not only for residents living in Realty Tower and employees at the Chase Bank on the building's first floor but for those in neighboring buildings as well.
Residents at the neighboring International Towers apartment building have been displaced since mid-June when a structural engineer's report deemed the Realty Building to be in "imminent danger" of collapse.
The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley have been providing temporary housing for those who have been displaced. Still, United Way President Bob Hannon says the organization can only afford to fund temporary housing for International Tower residents until August 2.
Hannon says that if the return date is beyond August 2, he's not panicking because he's already seen how the community comes together in times like these.
"We had a meeting [and] I thought we'd have about 20 social service networks come in. We had 60 different organizations come in and say 'We're here to help. What do you need?' United Way could've never done this on our own," Hannon said.
No definitive date has been set for residents to be allowed to return home at this time. Hannon says anyone who wants to lend a hand should call United Way at (330) 746-8494.
