All clear issued on lockdown at YSU, no suspect found in parking deck
A suspect is still not in custody following a shooting in Downtown Youngstown's bar district Friday.
A Penguin Alert was briefly issued to students and faculty at Youngstown State University after police said the suspect was last seen on campus.
According to the alert, the suspect in a shooting incident near Phelps and Commerce Street in Downtown Youngstown was spotted in the Wick Avenue parking deck on YSU's campus.
A 21 News viewer sent a photo of Youngstown Police and SWAT units on the scene at the parking deck and no one is in custody. YPD Captain Jason Simon told 21 News the search was called off just after 5 p.m.
Because of safety concerns, the entire university was on lockdown and students and the general public were asked to stay off campus for more than an hour.
YSU Police said no suspect was found in the parking deck or on YSU's campus.
Additionally, downtown businesses like Avalon Downtown Pizzeria, Oh Wow! Science Center and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County on Wick Avenue were on lockdown.
The suspect was described as a black male wearing a white shirt, grey sweatpants, and a black backpack.
Captain Simon told 21 News one person was shot along the Phelps Street Gateway. The victim was taken to the hospital and is believed to be in stable condition.
The surrounding area of Phelps and Commerce Street has since reopened.
