If you're out in Mill Creek Park and see crews drilling, it's to take soil samples for the city's efforts to eliminate sewage overflows.

The digging is happening in the northern section of the park.

Crews were out Thursday with big rigs near Lake Glacier, testing the conditions of  the soil.

Youngstown City Council is using nearly $5 million in ARP funds to start designing an updated sewer system, to prevent overflows in the park that could contaminate the water.

"They basically take big samples of soil to whatever depth they determine they need to, and then they run testing on that soil to determine its characteristics, how well it drains, structural numbers to see what types of loads it can support," said Deputy Director of Youngstown Public Works Chuck Shasho.

The work is expected to last three to four weeks.

Shasho says a bid process for the first two phases are expected net summer.
