$300,000 in state funds have been announced to help with fixing the Wellman Theater in downtown Girard.

Safety-Service Director Sal Ponzio explained much work needs done in hopes of re-opening the theater, including renovating roofing, heating and air conditioning, and restrooms, as well as asbestos removal. The funds from the state would help in pursuing these renovations.

"The end game is to have a theater there again," Ponzio said.

The Wellman was built in the 1930s. The original plan was to turn the theater into a smaller version of the successful Robins Theater in downtown Warren.

The $300,000 grant, as a part of Ohio’s Capital Improvements Budget, requires approval by the Ohio House, Ohio Senate and governor's office. If approved, the funding is expected to be received by October.
