1999: John Calipari, former New York Nets coach, comes to Youngstown to help a former assistant, Youngstown State University Coach John Robic, with YSU's youth basketball camp. He notes that Robic and he are both former Pittsburghers.

Austintown Township Trustee Dave Ditzler is elected chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, succeeding Michael Morley. 

The bid to install an elevator in the three-story Hermitage Middle School to accommodate disabled students comes in at $128,000, well above the engineer's estimate.

   

1984: Fireworks have become a big business in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys, from small sales outlets to three large distributors, B.J. Alan Co. of Beaver Township Zambelli Fireworks and Vitale Fireworks, both of New Castle. 

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission runs a small museum overlooking the post-Civil War boomtown of Pithole in northern Venango County. For 500 days, it had as many as 15,000 inhabitants until the oil wells ran dry. 

Father Joseph Malik, pastor of St. Mary Church in Warren for 14 years, says his final mass at the downtown landmark before leaving for his new assignment at St. Paul Church in Salem. 

 

1974: Under rules announced by the Ohio Lottery Commission, the state expects to make a millionaire every six to eight weeks. Winners will be picked every Thursday, with 100  finalists vying for the $1 million. 

A referee for the Ohio Board of Education recommends that 250 children in Coitsville Township be transferred from the Youngstown City School District to Campbell. The state board may accept, reject, or modify the recommendation. 

Atty. Gen. William B. Saxbe says it's unfair that Watergate convicts are receiving short sentences while common thieves spend years behind bars.

 

1949: Youngstown Patrolman Paul Mallery drives his cruiser in front of an airplane taxying down the runway of Bernard Airport. The chartered plane contained three men who were fleeing from a botched robbery at Mastorides Jewelry Store in Campbell. 

Eighteen people were injured when a Youngstown Municipal Railway bus was struck by a tractor-trailer loaded with 15 tons of steel at Himrod Avenue and Hine Street.

Leland Beye, owner of Eddie's Donut Shop, is installed as president of the Lion's Club during a party at the Tippecanoe Country Club.
