A week of events to celebrate Juneteenth continue in downtown Youngstown.

On Sunday there will be a lot more to lure you to join in a family day of fun.

"We will have fireworks at 9:00 p.m. A car show and soul food kick off at 1:00 p.m., so you don't want to miss out on those activities at all,"  Joseph Napier Chair of the Youngstown Juneteenth Committee said.

A celebration of culture, fun, and food took place downtown Youngstown, at Wean Park, near the Covelli Centre.

There were fundraisers and were cheers performed by East High cheerleaders, and Chaney high school cheerleaders, during youth day.

A youth talent show, R&B musical performances, allowed teens to showcase their talents and skills.

"We are here to have a good time with different youth activities. We have the Youngstown Fire Department out here to cool kids off. We have the Library of Mahoning County for a pop up library,"  Napier added.

Napier tells us it's important to pass history and culture down through stories, and pay it forward by pouring into our youth.

Slavery was abolished at the end of the Civil War, with the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in 1865.

But the jubilation and celebration didn't take place for African Americans until a year later June 19, 1866 when the last people held in bondage received word they were free.

Eleven 23 Beauty Studio held free braiding demonstrations and tutorials for kids, teens, and adults.

"We are here providing free braiding demonstrations. We host monthly workshops for the teens from ages 8 to 18. I think it's important for us to kind of give back to our culture, knowing how to braid and spreading that to our youth,"
Manager of Eleven 23 Beauty Studio, Kristin Woods said.

There were sports activities for youth.
