The American Legion Post 301 of Austintown and the VFW Post of Austintown will host their annual Flag Day Retirement Ceremony on Saturday, June 15 at Veterans Memorial Park, located on Wickliff Circle in Austintown. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is open to all residents of Austintown and surrounding areas.

The Flag Day Retirement Ceremony is an event where old and worn American flags are respectfully retired in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code. This code states that when a flag is no longer a fitting emblem to display, it should be retired in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.

This event aims to raise awareness about the significance of properly retiring American flags and to educate the community about the proper protocol. According to a press release, the ceremony is an opportunity for residents to participate in an event that honors the sacrifices and ideals that the flag represents.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their worn American flags for retirement. Trained volunteers will ensure that each flag is treated with the utmost respect and solemnity. The retiring process involves a ceremonial burning, conducted with reverence and care.
