Youngstown man identified after deadly YPD officer involved shooting in city
The Mahoning County coroner has identified the name of the man shot and killed by a Youngstown Police Officer on Thursday.
27-year-old Mathue O'Malley has been identified as the person shot and killed by an officer after a report of a domestic violence situation.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Youngstown Police Department's Office of Internal Affairs are looking into a shooting incident on the city's West Side that sent two people to the hospital, including a Youngstown Police Officer.
Police say a call came in around 1 a.m. Thursday for a domestic violence situation in the 100 block of South Maryland Avenue.
According to a police news release, O'Malley fired at an officer from the South Maryland house, and the officer fired back.
According to a BCI spokesman, the man who was shot and the officer were both taken to the hospital.
According to BCI, the officer wasn't hurt and has been released. It says he was taken to the hospital "as a precaution."
The officers involved have been placed on leave, as required by the police department's policy. Internal Affairs is checking to see that YPD rules were adhered to.
BCI is handling the investigation.
