Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is celebrated annually to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday's name stems from a blending of the words "June" and "nineteenth", as it was on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.

Early celebrations of Juneteenth date back to as early as 1866. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
